WYT Scholarship

At Appalachian Electric Cooperative (AEC), we are not only dedicated to delivering safe and reliable electricity to our members, but also to fostering the growth and development of our local communities. As part of our commitment to education and community engagement, AEC is proud to partner with the Tennessee Electric Cooperative Association (TECA) to bring the Washington Youth Tour (WYT) program to local high school juniors.

What is the WYT Program?

The Washington Youth Tour (WYT) is an exciting and educational program that offers high school juniors at Jefferson County High School, Grainger High School and Morristown West High School a unique opportunity to experience the rich history and vibrant democracy of our nation’s capital, Washington, D.C. This program provides young leaders with an unforgettable journey where they can explore our nation’s history, learn about the inner workings of our government, and connect with their peers from across Tennessee and the United States.

Why WYT Matters

The WYT program is not just a tour of Washington D.C.; it’s a life-changing experience that empowers young students to become informed and engaged citizens. Participants have the chance to meet with elected officials, gain a deeper understanding of the democratic process, and make lasting friendships with like-minded students. This program instills a sense of civic responsibility and a passion for community involvement that can last a lifetime.

AEC & TECA: Fostering Tomorrow’s Leaders

Appalachian Electric Cooperative partners with TECA to make the WYT program possible for our local high school juniors. Through this collaboration, we aim to support and encourage the development of our future leaders.

How do AEC & TECA Make It Happen?

Together with TECA, AEC coordinates the selection process for local students who will represent our community on the WYT program. We work closely with local schools, educators, and community organizations to identify exceptional students who demonstrate leadership, community involvement, and a strong desire to learn about the political process.

Once selected, these students embark on a thrilling adventure to Washington, D.C., where they join hundreds of other young leaders from across the state and the nation for a week filled with educational tours, leadership development, and hands-on civic engagement.
