How is My Bill Calculated?

Appalachian Electric Cooperative (AEC) follows the same formula in calculating every residential member’s electric bill. The following shows what information is used and where you can find it on the AEC Retail Electric Rate Sheet.

  1. Contact Information – Ways to contact us about your bill or account are clearly noted on your bill. You can always reach us at (833) 489-0606 or at www.aecoop.org.
  2. Account Summary – The most important information regarding your bill is placed inside a circle in the top center of your bill. Accounts with past due notices will be flagged with a red circle and red text indicating when a payment must be received to avoid a late fee.
  3. Service Address – The address where AEC is providing electric service for this bill. This may be different than the mailing address.
  4. Graph of Electric Usage vs. Temperature – This graph shows your monthly energy usage over the past 13 months compared with the temperature. You can use this information to track and manage your usage.
  1. Important Messages – This area displays messages related directly to your account or service, and other messages from AEC.
  2. Energy Usage Comparison – The amount of energy you consumed during this billing period compared with the previous billing period and with the same billing period a year ago.
  3. Payment Stub – If you are paying by check, please return this stub with your payment to ensure the payment is properly credited to your account. The payment stub also provides you with your account number, account summary, and amount due.
  4. Billing Summary – This section provides the account balance. If there is a past due amount, it will be clearly shown.

9. Meter Readings – This table shows meter data associated with the current bill. It indicates your service type, meter number, and meter readings. This is your actual energy usage for the billing period. We measure energy usage in kilowatt hours (kWh).

10. Account Activity – Any changes to your account since your last billing statement, including your most recent payment.

11. Billing Details – A detailed listing of the charges on your current bill. If you have been assessed a late fee, it will appear here.

12. Payment Methods – There are several convenient ways to pay your bill. Each is identified in this section.

 

Residential Billing and What it All Means

Account Number – The unique number associated with each electric service. One member may have multiple accounts, each with a different number.

Automatic Draft – The amount automatically charged to the credit or debit card enrolled in the AutoPay program.

Bank Draft – The amount automatically charged to the bank account enrolled in the AutoPay program.

Base Charge – A monthly fixed cost that covers a small portion of the cost to operate the electric system and provide electricity to the member; charged whether or not electricity is used.

Bill Date – The date the billing statement was generated.

Credit Balance – The amount currently applied to your account balance, above what is owed.

Current Charges – Charges accrued during the billing period.

Current Month Budget Amount – The current amount due based on the calculated budget (levelized) payment.

Energy Charge – A per kilowatt-hour charge calculated by the amount of electricity used during the billing period.

kWh Usage – The total kilowatt-hours consumed during the billing period.

Late Charge – For payments not received by the next bill due date.

Meter Number – A sequential number that identifies the electric meter located at the billing location.

Past Due Balance / Overdue Charges – The unpaid amount from previos billing period.

Present Reading – The kWh reading on your electric meter recorded on the “Services to” date.

Previous Reading – The kWh reading listed on your previous bill and recorded on the “Services From” date.

Rate Schedule – The type of electric service provided to match the needs of each account.
