Outside Plant (OSP) Technician

Appalachian Electric Cooperative (AEC) is a Rural Electric Cooperative serving parts of Jefferson, Grainger, Hamblen, and Sevier counties in East Tennessee. We currently have an opportunity for an Outside Plant Technician our New Market, Tennessee office. AEC offers a highly competitive total compensation package.

The Outside Plant Technician is responsible for the effective installation, troubleshooting, repair and maintenance of fiber to the x (FTTx) outside plant including but not limited to fiber optic cables, drop cables, optical splitters, and associated equipment. 

Job Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent required with additional training in electronics, engineering, networking or telecommunications preferred
  • Minimum of 2 years hands-on experience with the installation and operation of FTTx components including but not limited to central office, transport, feeder, distribution, drops, cabinets, splitters, ONTs, splice points, jumpers, hand holes, and pedestals
  • Have or acquire the skills and techniques necessary to distinguish exposed live parts from other parts of electric equipment, determine the nominal voltage of exposed live parts, and the clearance distances
  • Strong working knowledge of OTDR operation and testing, light testing, fiber troubleshooting and fiber plant design
  • Able to splice fiber using industry standards
  • Must hold a valid Tennessee Commercial Driver's License (Class A or B), or possess the ability to obtain a CDL within 90 days hire and maintain an insurable driving record.
  • Certification through the Electronics Technicians Association (ETA) as a Fiber Optics Installer (ETA FOI) and a Fiber Optics Technician – Outside Plant (ETA FOT-OSP) or ability to become certified within 12 months.

Essential Job Functions

  • Perform all necessary activities in the installation, maintenance, repair and ongoing operations of the outside fiber plant used to deliver residential and commercial services
  • Scope jobs for direct installation, maintenance, and repair of residential and commercial accounts and fiber plant extensions
  • Provide timely and courteous service and communication to members, coworkers and the general public
  • Mandatory on-call duty with overtime and on-call shift rotations are required
  • Must be able to regularly lift, carry, push and/or pull up to 50 lbs
  • Must be able to occasionally lift, carry, push and/or pull up to 100 lbs with assistance
  • Requires climbing and working in high places

Fiber Data Clerk (Temporary)

Appalachian Electric Cooperative (AEC) provides electric service to 47,000 members in East Tennessee. We own and maintain an electric distribution system that covers 600 square miles in parts of Grainger, Hamblen, Hawkins, Jefferson, and Sevier counties.

We currently have an opportunity for a Temporary Fiber Data Clerk in our New Market, Tennessee office. The Fiber Data Clerk is responsible for collecting, analyzing and maintaining records pertaining to AEC member broadband availability.

Job Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • 1-year experience in an office or clerical role
  • Proficient computer skills, including but not limited to, Microsoft Office Word, Outlook and Excel; and Google Chrome
  • Valid Tennessee Driver's License with an insurable driving record.
  • Attention to detail and accuracy
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality regarding AEC and departmental information
  • Regular on time attendance is required

Essential Job Functions

  • Collects, analyzes and maintains records pertaining to AEC member broadband availability
  • Locates and analyzes infrastructure as it pertains to broadband and electric utilities 
  • Proficient computer skills, including but not limited to, Microsoft Office Word, Outlook and Excel; and Google Chrome
  • Develops and maintains positive and professional customer service relations with members, contractors, and other employees.
  • The position is primarily in an indoor working environment with occasional field work. 
  •  Occasionally required to lift, carry, push and/or pull 20 lbs.

 

The noise level in the work environment is moderate.
